5 Things You Should Have in Your Car This Winter

A massive storm can come up quickly and dump more snow than predicted. It may not be possible to continue driving if the snow starts falling too rapidly. And it is possible to be stuck in your car for a significant period of time. Consider the following list of five things you should have in your car this winter in case you wind up in an unexpected snow storm.

1. Gas: Before heading out, verify that the car is filled with gas. If you are stuck in a snow storm, you will want to have gas to keep the car warm for as long as possible.

2. Extra Clothes and Blankets: If the car does run out of gas, you will want appropriate clothes for the weather. Consider storing extra warm clothes, coats, hats, mittens and blankets in your car so you and any passengers can stay warmer if stuck in the car for an extended period of time. a car covered in snow

3. Food and Water: Though not common, people can become stuck in their vehicles for over 24 hours before rescuers can reach the scene. Remember, the EMTs and police will have trouble traveling through the deep snow as well. Having a small supply of food and water can be very helpful as you wait for assistance.

4. Shovel: It is possible that you will get stuck in the snow at some point this winter. Whether it is because you went slightly off the road or because of a sudden significant accumulation doesn't matter. You will want to get yourself unstuck. Having a shovel in your car can be the difference between digging out and having to wait for help. It is possible to buy a travel shovel that breaks down into multiple pieces for easier storage. Consider traveling with kitty litter as well, which can provide extra traction if you are stuck.

5. Charged Cell Phone: While many people don't travel anywhere without a cell phone, the charge is not always maximized. If snow is a possibility during your travels be sure you depart with a completely charged cell phone. Don't make unimportant phone calls and run down the battery. If you do end up stuck, keep any phone calls you do make quick to preserve the battery as long as possible.

If you live in an area that gets snow, make sure you are prepared this winter. Hopefully you won't get stuck but if you do, your wait for help can be much more pleasant if you have the necessary items on hand.
